The dislocated landscapes in this series are like us, accumulations of experiences, interactions, and weather; stacked and layered as sediment revealing the residual effects of slow change. In 2008 and again in 2018 I visited a rural section of Ireland in northwest County Mayo. An investigation of this landscape is seen in the work made there; they server as an act of locating. This section of coastline, bog, and fields experience harsh, dramatic winters and typically wet, long summer days. They are uniquely marked by thousands of years of human habitation. Through drawing and walking, I try to find my home in a place, to become intimate with its particularities and to witness our connection. The drawings contain a layering of time, memory, and mark and embrace the emotional possibilities of line, light, and form.

The elemental, fluid works in the evolving “Echolocation Series” attempt to locate my place in relation to my surroundings. They result from a repeated practice of filling page after page in numerous sketchbooks with instinctive marks that witness the effortless and ever changing architecture of weather, light, and cloud. ‘Skyscapes’ teach me about growth, change, and the brilliance of interconnectedness. This line-based research series provides many future works with a personal visual language rooted in continual movement and unique ephemeral moments.
